Cooling System Service Products


No engine cooling system is maintenance free. Over time coolant can degrade through dilution with water and additives can deplete. Foreign substances can enter the cooling system, affecting the coolant chemistry. Products can get mixed, making testing and servicing difficult.

Coolant Filtration

Contamination is one of the key contributors to pump seal failure. Using a coolant filter can reduce the risk of pump seal failure by up to one third. A coolant filter removes harmful contamination that enters the cooling system via poor quality water, internal component wear or inbuilt particulate like core sand from the manufacturing process.

Coolant filters are a quick and easy way to regularly service coolant and replace spent additive, and to protect the system against corrosion and other problems like over or under-dosing.

Test Strips

The only correct way to understand the condition of coolant is to test it. Regular testing can identify trends that may be leading to equipment damage.

Fleetguard Filtration’s easy to use dip and read test strips offer the simplest means to check what condition your coolant is in and help identify any issues before they result in major failures.

Fleetguard test strips are available for PG Platinum and PG Plus.

Liquid Additives

Fleetguard Filtration uses two types of additives in our coolant formulations.

Liquid additive for PG Plus

The additive package for PG Plus contains nitrite and molybate which are excellent for controlling liner pitting that can occur on engine piston sleeves. The nitrite chemically transforms the oxide present on the steel liner into a harder material. In doing so, the nitrite in the additive depletes and requires replenishment over time.

Checking the coolant with test strips indicates the level of additive in PG Plus and provides information on how much additive is required to be added to the system. In systems up to 80 litres the appropriate filter can be used to administer additive, however larger systems require larger quantities of additive which is why Cummins Filtration produces liquid additive to service these systems.

Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) is necessary to boost additive levels in PG Plus, enabling your system to operate at optimum performance levels while providing maximum protection.

Liquid additive for PG Platinum

The organic additive package in PG Platinum provides protection differently to PG Plus. The additive components in PG Platinum form a bond with the surface of the metals and other materials within the cooling system and are not depleted in the same way. Hence PG Platinum does not generally need to be topped-up with SCA during its service life. This creates a much simpler servicing process and eliminates the possibility of dosing errors.


Low glycol levels in coolant will reduce the boiling point and have a detrimental effect on the engine, particularly in hot spots around the head.

Refractometers provide a more accurate means of measuring the glycol content of engine coolant. It is important to maintain glycol levels within the limits of the specification. Different products may require different refractometers depending on their additive make up.

Fleetguard Filtration provides two types of refractometers; one for PG Plus and one for PG Platinum. The appropriate unit must be used with the correct coolant.
